PORT Adelaide midfielder Ben Newton made a strong bid to break into the Power line-up for next week's semi-final against Fremantle, starring for the SANFL Magpies on Saturday.
Newton, who was an emergency for Port for its big win over Richmond on Sunday, finished with 26 possessions, 10 clearances and two goals in the Magpies' loss to Norwood in the SANFL semi-final.
The Power could be looking to replace speedster Matt White next week against the Dockers after he was substituted against the Tigers with a suspected broken jaw.
Other AFL-listed players to run out for Port in the semi-final were Aaron Young (25 possessions and nine clearances), Karl Amon (16 and one goal), Tom Logan (15 and one) and Jarman Impey (seven and one).
Port remains alive in the SANFL final series and will face South Adelaide next weekend.
NEAFL
The Sydney Swans also have enviable depth as they continue their finals campaign, with midfielder Tom Mitchell starring in the NEAFL.
The young onballer was dropped for the Swans' qualifying final against Fremantle but responded with a terrific performance in the reserves' preliminary final against NT Thunder.
Jeremy Laidler and Dean Towers, who were emergencies alongside Mitchell for the Swans' clash against the Dockers, were also named in the NEAFL team's best players.
VFL
Sandringham fielded a number of young St Kilda players who qualified to play finals for the Zebras.
Saints Tom Simpkin, Seb Ross, Darren Minchington and Jason Holmes were all among the best players for Sandringham, but their season came to an end against Port Melbourne.
WAFL
West Coast had a number of players in action for WAFL-aligned club East Perth on Saturday, with Sam Butler (29 possessions), Blayne Wilson (28), Dom Sheed (25) and Fraser McInnes (two goals) influential in the Royals' semi-final win over Subiaco.
Fremantle's alignment club Peel Thunder did not qualify for finals and the Dockers' three emergencies – Matt de Boer, Alex Pearce and Hayden Crozier – all travelled to Sydney, with Crozier replacing ruckman Jon Griffin 90 minutes before the match.
