Top-placed Belconnen have taken their winning streak to 11 games after beating the Swans Reserves for the second time this season. The Magpies had nine more scoring shots than the Swans on Saturday at ANZ Stadium to finish the game 14-point winners.

The Swans team was depleted by injury with Brett Meredith (shoulder), Peter Faulks (chest) and Ed Barlow (hamstring) out of action by the early stages of the third quarter.

Belconnen blew out their lead kicking six goals to one from the 20 minute mark of the second quarter to six minutes into the third quarter and although the Swans kicked three goals in five minutes at the start of the final term the damage had been done.

Daniel Currie was good for the Swans, playing in the ruck and forward and Ben Mathews, Tim Schmidt and Nick Smith all played well in the midfield with Smith also having a spell in defence.

Heath Grundy was once again one of the Swans’ best, at centre half forward for the first half and centre half back in the second, as was Aaron Bruce in the forward line.

At quarter time the margin was just three points after both teams goaled four times, though Belconnen had three extra scoring shots. Grundy kicked the Swans’ first goal after a strong mark in the goal square and after Belconnen goaled twice Schmidt and Jesse White each kicked a goal. At the 21 minute mark of the quarter, Grundy kicked his second from a free kick 35 metres out.

Belconnen opened the second term with their fifth goal for the game before the Swans had a run of three. Matthew Beckmans kicked a goal from 45 metres, Swans scholarship player Ryan Bottin-Noonan snapped one from the boundary and Ryan Brabazon marked and goaled from 45 metres. Patrick Veszpremi also goaled for the Swans in the second quarter and Grundy kicked his third. At half time Belconnen were leading the Swans by five points.

By the third break, Belconnen had extended their lead to 20-points kicking seven goals and only allowing the Swans five. Bruce, Veszpremi and Jake Orreal kicked goals and Currie kicked two, one from a mark at 45 metres and one from a free kick 15 metres out.

Although in the final quarter Brendan Murphy and Schmidt kicked goals on the run, Smith snapped a goal from 25 metres out, Bruce kicked his second goal for the game and the Swans kept Belconnen to just three goals it was not enough for them to claim the lead. After trailing at every break the Swans ended the game 14-points behind.

On Sunday July 13, the Swans meet Eastlake at Manuka Oval at 2pm. This will be the third time the sides meet this season with Eastlake winning in round four and the Swans beating them in round eight.
