GEELONG'S compensation pick for losing Gary Ablett has placed the Cats at the front of the queue to sign Gold Coast midfielder Josh Caddy.

After losing Ablett before the 2011 season, Geelong was compensated with a pick after the ninth-placed team in the first round to be activated within five years, which takes it through to the 2015 draft.

Before this season, the Cats chose against activating the selection in the 2012 NAB AFL Draft. Gold Coast therefore would be unable to activate the selection this season.

But such a scenario would suit the Suns, who are trying to stretch out the introduction of young stars rather than have them coming through at once.

Trade Machine: have your say

Caddy's manager, Peter Lenton, said on Gillette AFL Trade Radio that he'd spoken to "several" Victorian clubs about Caddy, who wants to return to his home state, before confirming that Geelong, North Melbourne and St Kilda were among those clubs.

"I would suggest that Geelong's compensation pick is probably one that's attractive to Gold Coast," Lenton said.

"If I felt as though there was one specific club leading the charge, I think they're fairly well-placed.

"But things can change. It's a bit hard to say at this stage, but I think that's where it sits at the moment."

Lenton said Caddy was prepared to wait for the right deal, even if that means talks about his future continue well into the three weeks of the Gillette AFL Trade Period.

The 20-year-old has been linked to Melbourne, but he's made it known that he's not interested in going to the Demons.

"At this early stage we're happy to keep the conversation going and then at some stage narrow in and see what best suits," Lenton said.

"I have no doubt that a deal will be struck where both parties are really happy."
