WESTERN Bulldogs captain Brad Johnson has officially committed to the club for a 17th season after signing a one-year deal on Thursday.

The club had confirmed that the 33-year-old would be offered another contract, which would only be for 2010 given its policy for players over 30.

Johnson said he was looking forward to continuing with the Bulldogs, with the side to be bolstered by new recruit Barry Hall.

"It is very exciting," he told westernbulldogs.com.au.

"I am obviously rapt to be playing on next year. The fact that Brian (Lake) has recommitted to the club and with the inclusion of Barry for the 2010 season, it's a fantastic time to be at the Western Bulldogs."

Johnson did not say whether he planned to retain the club captaincy for another year.

He has held the position since the start of 2006, but had stepped in for the injured Luke Darcy for most of 2005.

Football operations manager James Fantasia said it was pleasing to have Johnson's commitment for another year.

"Apart from his ability, Brad is just an exceptional character to have around the club," Fantasia said.

"He is a fantastic mentor to our young players and a great leader on the ground."

Last weekend, Johnson placed fourth in the club's best and fairest count, held at the Melbourne Exhibition and Convention Centre.

He is scheduled to play his 350th AFL game in round one of next season.

The Bulldogs will wait until after trade week to decide whether veterans Jason Akermanis and Nathan Eagleton will also be offered new contracts.
