RICHMOND premiership forward Jacob Townsend appears likely to remain at Punt Road in 2019 as a rookie-listed player.

The 25-year-old recently underwent a medical at Sydney, as did Geelong goalkicker Daniel Menzel.

It is understood the Swans have cooled on Townsend, which strengthens Menzel's case of joining the Swans as a delisted free agent.

The Tigers have said they are committed to retaining the 47-game player if another opportunity didn't eventuate.

He now looks set to remain on their list as a rookie.

"We would love for Jacob to remain at Richmond and he knows there is a spot for him at the club," football manager Neil Balme said last month.

"He is well within his rights as a delisted free agent to look for new opportunities and should they arise, we will support his decision."

Townsend has also been linked to Greater Western Sydney, where he began his career in 2010 as a zone draft selection.

It is understood he had a medical with the Giants and met with coach Leon Cameron.

However, their commitment to former Fremantle midfielder Tom Sheridan as a delisted free agent two weeks ago has all but ruled them out of adding him to their list.

Townsend will have a delayed start to the pre-season because of the broken lower left leg he suffered in the final VFL game of the year.

He told AFL.com.au in September he would likely be out of training until the New Year after surgery to put a plate over his fibula and his syndesmosis joint wired together.

However, he believes he'll be able to ramp things up quickly after that and be available for the start of the season.

The Tigers recently cleared out their rookie list, promoting Callum Moore to the primary list and delisting Mabior Chol.

However, Chol also remains a chance to stay a Tiger in 2019.

"Mabior has shown promising signs over the past three seasons and the club will consider its options over the coming weeks," Balme said.

Mildura product Derek Eggmolesse-Smith, who came through the club's Next Generation Academy Program, has been retained for a second season as a category B rookie.

Richmond's first-to-fourth-year players will start their pre-season on Monday, with the five-year-plus players to follow on Monday, December 3.
