After being a late withdrawal from the Lions’ side last week against Adelaide, Captain Jonathan Brown looks likely to reach his 200-game milestone this Sunday against Essendon after being named in the team’s 25-man preliminary squad.

Brown has done enough on the training track this week to suggest that he has overcome a minor knee complaint, but will be put through his paces again at the Lions’ final training session of the week on Saturday in Melbourne.

Lions Assistant Coach Adrian Fletcher said that Brown’s impending milestone was not a consideration for the Match Committee when selecting the final team. He also said there was no temptation to rest him for one more week to allow him to run out for his 200th match at the Gabba in Round 22.

“If he feels like his body can get through a game, he will be a chance to play this week,” Fletcher said.

“We don’t have to name our final side until Friday, so if he feels like he can play at his best then we would certainly considering him.”

“We have to pick our best team for Round 21. If Browny’s in it, then that’s a bonus. If he’s not, then we’ll give him until Round 22.”

If Brown plays on Sunday, it will mean the Club’s Victorian members and supporters will have the opportunity to witness the inspirational skipper’s 200th game first hand.

“Browny’s got a bus full of people from his home town of Warrnambool gearing up to come down and watch his 200th if he plays,” Fletcher said.

“It will cost them less money to drive two hours to Melbourne than to fly to Brisbane,” he joked.
