THE AFL has asked Essendon why a team sheet with Mark McVeigh’s name on it landed in the Brisbane Lions’ change rooms before last Saturday night’s match, forcing opposition coach Michael Voss to do a quick rethink of his match-ups before the error was rectified.

McVeigh’s name was accidentally written down in the starting 22 instead of Ricky Dyson, with the Bombers being forced to alter their team sheet – and notify the Lions – in time for the first bounce.

“There’s a please explain [from the AFL],” Essendon football manager Paul Hamilton explained on Monday.

“That rule is in place to make sure that you don’t inadvertently put a player in who you haven’t named in your side, and I think that’s a very good rule.

“What happened [on Saturday night] was human error, an admin error … as soon as we were made aware the AFL and Brisbane were notified and the side ran out as named on Thursday night.”

Hamilton said those responsible weren’t facing any harsh punishment.

“The people involved have been counselled about getting it right but that’s about all that’s happened,” he said.
