Track report

Patrick Cripps (fractured jaw) and Sam Rowe (concussion) trained on Thursday afternoon and will be given every opportunity to line up against Essendon on Sunday. There is good news for the Blues as ruckman Andrew Phillips and rookie small forward Kym Lebois will play in the VFL opening round match against Port Melbourne at North Port Oval on Saturday. Phillips missed the JLT Community Series after suffering a stress reaction in his left foot in January and is likely to play limited game-time against the Borough. Lebois played one pre-season game against Melbourne at Casey Fields and kicked a spectacular goal before succumbing to an ankle injury. - Howard Kotton

Ex-Roo Wells is closing in on a long-awaited debut for the Pies and could be ready for round four. Wills and Brown have recovered and could be available to play in the VFL. Track report

Essendon has added midfielder Ben Howlett to its injury list, although the hamstring strain he suffered in his return game against the Brisbane Lions last week was relatively minor as by Tuesday he was back running laps at the club. That aside, the Bombers remain in a good position with the health of their list. Ruck pair Matthew Leuenberger (hamstring) and Tom Bellchambers (knee) are available after recovering from their injuries, giving the Bombers close to a full side to select from. - Callum Twomey

Suspensions to Hogan and Lewis hurt immensely, but importantly for Melbourne it looks like getting a few players back from injury. Hibberd is tracking along nicely and could be ready to play next week, although he may need a game or two in the VFL for conditioning purposes. Hibberd played just one JLT Community Series game and missed the entire 2016 season due to a WADA-imposed suspension.
