THE BRISBANE Lions' horror season has taken another hit, with defender Dan McStay out for the final six rounds with a broken ankle.

McStay suffered the injury in the third quarter of Sunday's 79-point loss against Greater Western Sydney and scans confirmed the worst possible result.

"He's out for the year," Lions football manager Matt Francis told AFL.com.au.

"It's a big blow."

The versatile McStay can play at both ends of the ground and was doing a solid job on Giant Jeremy Cameron before his injury.

The 21-year-old joins Dayne Beams (knee), Allen Christensen (collarbone), Tom Bell (knee) and Ryan Harwood (knee) on the sidelines for the rest of 2016.

Small forward Lewy Taylor missed Sunday's game with an ankle injury and is unlikely to play Essendon this weekend.

Ruckman Stefan Martin will have precautionary scans on his ribs after being collected in a heavy hit by Steve Johnson, but after playing the game out, should get the green light to play the Bombers.
