IT IS increasingly likely Fremantle will lose uncontracted defender Chris Tarrant for nothing after Collingwood ruled out giving up pick No.43 in next month's NAB AFL Draft for the 30-year-old.

Tarrant walked out on the Dockers to return to Melbourne at the end of the season and has nominated former club Collingwood as his team of choice.

The Pies, who are aware they can secure the veteran as a free agent in the pre-season or national drafts, are refusing to budge on their offer of pick No.55, according to a report in the Sunday Herald Sun.

Tarrant has already gone public saying he'll retire if a club other than Collingwood tries to pick him up, meaning he could land at the Pies under similar circumstances to premiership player Luke Ball last year.

The Sunday Age reports Carlton utility Andrew Walker could yet become embroiled in the Tarrant deal, with the Blues showing a minor interest in out-of-favour Collingwood forward Jack Anthony.

Port Adelaide is keen to secure Walker, but can't do so unless the club manages to offload enigmatic forward Daniel Motlop.

The Power were hopeful of moving the troubled star to Geelong, where his younger brother Steven is contracted, but the Cats have no interest in the oldest Motlop according to the Sunday Age.

The Sunday Herald Sun says Port Adelaide has offered up vice-captain Jacob Surjan to the Blues to try and get the Walker deal done.

Walker could still land at the Western Bulldogs if the club's play for Justin Sherman falls flat, according to reports in the same newspaper.

The Brisbane Lions are hoping Sherman will accept a lucrative four-year deal to join the Sydney Swans, despite the dashing onballer saying he wants to play with the Dogs next season.

Talks between Hawthorn and the Dogs over Josh Hill have also reached an impasse, with the Bulldogs telling the Hawks to find a pick below No.40 for the athletic goalkicker, according to the Sunday Age.

The Hawks are unwilling to part with their first or second-round picks and have already used the compensation pick received for losing Campbell Brown to Gold Coast on North Melbourne big man David Hale.

Dogs' ruckman Will Minson and Geelong pair Mark Blake and Trent West look set to stay with their current clubs, but the Cats haven't ruled out trading one of their Gary Ablett compensation picks back to the Suns in exchange for a high first-round selection in this year's national draft.

The compensation picks are able to be used anytime in the next five years and Gold Coast is keen to shore up its position in future drafts, according to the Sunday Age.

The Suns could secure more draft picks in the exchange period, with the club considering pre-listing North Ballarat midfielder Cam Richardson, so he can be traded to North Melbourne.

The Sunday Age says the Roos are yet to offer the right pick to satisfy Gold Coast's demands.

The Sunday Herald Sun reports Hawthorn hasn't completely closed the door on unsettled goalsneak Rhan Hooper, who has quit the club to return to Queensland and be closer to his family.

Hooper met with former Brisbane Lions coach Leigh Matthews last week and could still nominate for the pre-season draft.

The same newspaper also reports that St Kilda and Essendon made inquiries about axed West Coast forward Tony Notte.
