Chief executive Trevor Nisbett declared on Friday night the Eagles need to be sure Worsfold is the right man to coach them next season.
Worsfold, who coached the Eagles to their last premiership in 2006, has indicated his preference is to remain with the club and he was hoping for a two-year extension.
Speaking ahead of Friday night's clash against Collingwood at the MCG, Nisbett said "all the stars have to align" for Worsfold to receive a contract extension.
"It's like any business decision, you have to make the decision on looking at everything across the year," Nisbett told 3AW.
"We need to make the right decision and we want John to coach us next year, but we want to make sure we're correct.
"Although there's every chance that's going to happen, we need to be sure."
West Coast has endured a horror season with injuries and cannot finish inside the top eight.
Nisbett said the club would need to undergo a thorough investigation of its entire football department.
Following that investigation, Worsfold will deliver a report to the West Coast board.
"After that report's given and our review of our footy department comes in, then the board will make a measured decision," Nisbett said.
"Because of the season we've had, we're going through a very thorough investigation of our football department.
"Obviously with the injuries we've had, we have to do a medical check as well and how we've managed our injuries."
Nisbett said the Eagles would not be talking to Paul Roos about coaching the club next season.
He said highly rated midfield coach Scott Burns was "ready to go" if offered a senior coaching job.
"We'd like to retain him; he's very good and he does a great job for us," Nisbett said.
"If someone was to approach him I'm sure Scott would be very happy to take the interview and take the call."
