Speight was on the receiving end of a hard hit from Box Hill’s Ben Fagan - the latter reported for charging by the field umpire.
19 year-old Speight was taken to the Epworth hospital on Saturday night and underwent surgery the following morning.
“It’s a pretty standard break,” North doctor Con Mitropoulos told kangaroos.com.au.
“It broke in two places as a result of the collision and needed to be put back together with two plates, wires and screws.”
Mitropoulos expects the teenager to be kept in hospital until Wednesday.
“The surgeon was happy with how the operation went so now it’s a just a matter of letting it heal properly and helping him recover in the best possible way.”
Speight had a promising start to 2010 after being nominated as North Melbourne’s eligible rookie listed player, meaning he was available to be promoted into the senior side at any stage during the year.
Already named as an emergency by coach Brad Scott on two occasions, the South Australian will be hoping to bounce back quickly and regain his sensational form.
However doctor Mitropoulos says he’ll have to be patient.
“We anticipate this being a four to six week injury for Ben but he’s in very good spirits and he’ll be back at the club to begin rehab in the coming days.”
Speight was picked up by North Melbourne in the 2008 Rookie Draft.
