A message from the Richmond FC President, Gary March:

I am pleased to announce the appointment of former captain and dual club best and fairest winner, Tony Free, to the Richmond Board.

Tony was a talented, tough, extremely competitive on-baller, with enormous courage. He worked his way through the ranks at Richmond – from under 19’s to seniors- all in one year (1987). Tony’s outstanding leadership qualities were recognised when he was appointed the Tigers’ senior captain in 1994 and he retained the captaincy until his premature retirement due to severe knee problems at the start of 1997.

Tony will be a tremendous asset as the club continues to grow and move forward. The board has been searching for some time for a contemporary player who will help the club build its young list. At only 38 years of age, Tony possesses both the youth and experience required. He brings to the role a track record as a successful businessman as the owner and operator of a small business. Tony also spent time working in sports management with Advantage International. His football acumen combined with his business experience will be a fresh and exciting addition to our club.

Tony will fill the casual vacancy created by the recent retirement of Greg Miller. I join my fellow board members in paying tribute to the continued tireless service of Greg Miller. Greg joined the board at a very difficult time in our history almost four years ago.

Greg’s appointment helped create stability and he was instrumental in developing planning processes that are still in place today. With Tony now stepping up to the board, Greg will be able to concentrate on his role as General Manager of Football Operations. As we continue to expand and grow our football department, Greg’s experience and knowledge in this area will be vital.
