Disability Minister Jennifer Rankine and Adelaide Crows Coach Neil Craig today launched a new program to assist young people with Down Syndrome to find secure employment.

The Gordon Andrew Program - named after Craig’s late uncle who lived with Down Syndrome - will develop partnerships between young trainees and employers to foster long-term careers and increase health and well-being.

The program is a partnership between the Department for Families and Communities (Disability SA), the Adelaide Football Club and Foundation 21 - a lead agency on Down Syndrome.

Ms Rankine said the program would give people with Down Syndrome the opportunity to work for the community.

“Having a stable and satisfying job is a huge factor that contributes to our health and well-being,” she said.

“Everyone has the right to reach their potential and participate in the State’s workforce and DFC looks forward to working with the Crows and Foundation 21.

“I believe that together, the three agencies have the knowledge and commitment to contribute to people’s well-being and employment opportunities.”

Craig said he became aware of discrimination towards people with a disability because of his uncle and has since been motivated to help such people achieve their full potential.

“There is a strong need to develop life skills for people with Down Syndrome so they may have better opportunities, especially in the workforce,” he said.

“My uncle would have been proud to have had this program named after him, as I am, and I am pleased to have this opportunity to be involved to help create a greater awareness of the capabilities of people with Down Syndrome.”

The Program will run for three years initially and received $100,000 of funding from DFC.

John Solomon – Chairman of foundation21 said he was very excited with the launch of the Gordon Andrew Program.

“This is an area that more and more parents have been looking for assistance with,” he said.

“The beauty of our program is that more than 80% of the funds will be spent directly on the participants – not on admin, which foundation21 will cover itself.”
