The AFL wishes to advise the Match Review Panel has reviewed the weekend’s matches. The following charges were laid:
Chris Dawes, Collingwood, has been charged with a Level One striking offence against Reece Conca, Richmond, during the second quarter of the Round Four match between Collingwood and Richmond, played at the MCG on Friday April 15, 2011.
In summary, his previous poor record means that his reprimand is increased to a one-game sanction and must remain at one-game, even with an early plea.
The incident was assessed as negligent conduct (one point), low impact (one point) and high contact (two points). This is a total of four activation points, resulting in a classification of a Level One offence, drawing 80 demerit points and a reprimand. He has an existing bad record of 93.75 demerit points carried over from within the last 12 months, increasing the penalty to 173.75 points and a one-match sanction. An early plea reduces the sanction by 25 per cent to 130.31 points and a one-match sanction.
Nick Smith, Sydney Swans, has been charged with a first offence for making negligent contact with an umpire (Jason Armstrong) during the third quarter of the Round Four match between the Sydney Swans and the Geelong Cats, played at the SCG on Saturday April 16, 2011.
In summary, he can accept a $900 sanction with an early plea.

Matthew Pavlich, Fremantle, has been charged with a Level Two striking offence against Liam Anthony, North Melbourne, during the first quarter of the Round Four match between Fremantle and North Melbourne, played at Patersons Stadium on Sunday April 17, 2011.
In summary, his previous good record means that he can accept a reprimand and 70.31 points towards his future record with an early plea.
The incident was assessed as reckless conduct (two points), low impact (one point) and high contact (two points). This is a total of five activation points, resulting in a classification of a Level Two offence, drawing 125 demerit points and a one-match sanction. He has an existing five-year good record, which reduces the sanction by 25 per cent to a reprimand and 93.75 points towards his future record. An early plea reduces the sanction by 25 per cent to a reprimand and 70.31 points towards his future record.
Other incidents assessed
The match day report against Collingwood’s Leigh Brown for striking Richmond’s Reece Conca during the third quarter of Friday’s match was assessed. The panel said that Brown’s arm was held back by Richmond player Angus Graham as Conca was completing a mark, and Brown was attempting to reach the contest. It was the view of the panel that the retarding of Brown’s arm contributed to the contact, which was made with an open hand. The panel did not view his action as a reportable offence and no further action was taken.
Contact between West Coast’s Mitch Brown and Hawthorn’s Cyril Rioli from the third quarter of Saturday’s match was assessed. The panel said there was no forceful high contact made and no further action was taken.
Contact between West Coast’s Darren Glass and Hawthorn’s Lance Franklin from the third quarter of Saturday’s match was assessed. West Coast player Shannon Hurn had played on from full back, when Glass came in to shepherd Franklin away from his teammate. Based on the video evidence available and a medical report from Hawthorn, forceful high contact could not be determined. No further action was taken.
Contact between the Geelong Cats’ James Podsiadly and the Sydney Swans’ Shane Mumford from the second quarter of Saturday’s match was assessed. Mumford had received a handball when Podsiadly approached the Sydney player to make contact. Contact was made to the upper body and the under arm region. A free kick was paid at the time and the medical report stated there was no injury to the Sydney player. The panel determined that any high contact that was made was below the force required to constitute a reportable offence.
Contact between Fremantle’s Jayden Pitt and North Melbourne’s Lindsay Thomas from the first quarter of Sunday’s match was assessed. Thomas slid into the Fremantle player and it was the view of the panel that Pitt had no case to answer.
Contact between Fremantle’s Hayden Ballantyne and North Melbourne’s Brent Harvey from the second quarter of Sunday’s match was assessed. The panel said that the force was below that required to constitute a reportable offence. No further action was taken.
