COLLINGWOOD has closed ranks around Sam Murray as the defender faces a drugs charge from the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority.

Murray, 20, recorded an elevated reading in a post-match drugs test, possibly the Magpies' game against Richmond at the MCG on July 28.

"One thing we have done really well is care for each other and look for each other," Collingwood coach Nathan Buckley said in response to a post-match question about Murray.

"Whether it's an injured player or players toiling away in the VFL and trying to put a block of form together.

"We're human, people make blues, but we're trying to look after each other as well as we have.

"Any specific questions about Sam, we've dealt through a statement and we're just bystanders."

Collingwood said ASADA was leading the investigation and was in charge of the timing.

The Magpies also confirmed Murray had sought independent legal advice.

In a statement on Friday morning, Collingwood chief executive Mark Anderson said the club had a strong stance against drugs in sport, but was also aware of supporting the 20-year-old's welfare.
