VETERAN Brownlow medallist Simon Black says the Brisbane Lions lack resilience and need to work on their consistency if they're to break out of the losing cycle they find themselves in after round six.
The Lions are yet to win a game from five starts this season but have been in winnable positions in four of the losses, including Saturday night's 26-point defeat at the hands of Richmond.
Black, 32, said his young side was giving up leads too easily and running out of concentration late in each quarter.
"Richmond kicked five goals in the last minute and a half of quarters," he told afl.com.au after the game at the MCG.
"Being able to sustain our effort for longer is what we're lacking and what we've got to do.
"We've gotten the lead and then the opposition has grabbed it straight back off us a few times this year. We're not resilient when we get the lead at the moment.
"We're a maturing side, but it's still not good enough to be playing in patches like we are. We need to be more consistent or we'll keep losing like we have been."
Despite having failed to win any of the gettable games, Black said the emerging side was not struggling to believe it could actually run out four quarters.
He says the self-belief of the group is intact regardless of the ugly start to the season that now, after North Melbourne's win over Port Adelaide earlier on Saturday, has the Lions on the bottom of the ladder and as the only side yet to win a game.
"We do believe. We spoke about what it was going to take at three-quarter time to win, and I'm sure Richmond was doing the same over there at their huddle," he said.
"Then they just came out and jumped into the last quarter better.
"But it's not good enough. They beat us around the middle of the ground early in that last quarter, and it really cost us and it put our defence under a lot of pressure."
Lions coach Michael Voss spoke of the players' lack of concentration during parts of the game where they coughed up easy goals and let the Tigers get a run on.
Black believes the Lions are struggling in that area as they attempt to rebuild themselves as a strong side, but has confidence the players have the ability to get it under control.
"Hopefully it's just part of the maturing that we're going through," he said.
"We're a pretty young side and we're coming off a young and inexperienced foundation.
"We've just got to get more games into the group and hope they'll get better in time and grasp that sooner rather than later, because losing gets pretty tiring."
