FREMANTLE coach Mark Harvey has overseen his team's return to pre-season training with a new role in prospect for Chris Tarrant and a welcome home plan for new Tiger Ben Cousins.

Harvey wants to try Tarrant in roles further up the ground in 2009 as he searches for the right formula for an increasingly young playing list, but he will have an experienced team in the NAB Cup match against Richmond at Subiaco Oval on February 15.

It could be the chance for Cousins to play in Perth again, and Harvey would welcome that.

"Certainly we will be playing a fair bit of experience early on. We will play most of our experienced players against Richmond first up in the NAB Cup and they look to be in for a big year, so that will be a good test to see where we are at," he said.

Harvey said it would "be great for the game" if Cousins' return to football was in Perth.

"I'm sure you'd have a packed stadium. It would be good to see Ben back over here playing and seeing where he's at. I'd invite him to play if that means anything, but I'm not sure if he'll be ready. He'll certainly be welcomed back though."

Tarrant hasn’t been able to recapture the All-Australian form he had at Collingwood since arriving at Fremantle, and both Harvey and Tarrant are looking forward to seeing how he goes in the midfield, on the wing or across half-back.

"Sometimes when guys have been in the system a long time, a change can be as good as anything," Harvey said.

"We will see how he evolves around stoppages and whether he can move into that situation. He can certainly run and carry the load of a midfielder from a running aspect and also across the half-back line. I want to try to settle him down as early as I can though.

"There might still be times when he goes forward, depending on how the situations work out. You sometimes need to spark a player, and when I spoke about it with him I immediately saw the impact (of it). It will be an interesting stage."

Under new fitness staff, Fremantle's players are also well ahead physically of this time last year and Harvey expects that to continue. There have been a few standouts that he is looking forward to seeing develop further as well.

"They are probably ahead 10 or 15 per cent at this stage, and within two months game situations will top that up. We've had different strategies in the weight room, new ideas and measurements on the running and fitness load. We've covered a lot more ground than we did last year," he said.

"The ones burning up the track are guys like Steven Dodd, (Garrick) Ibbotson, (Ryan) Crowley and (Daniel) Gilmore.

"Stephen Hill is also holding his own, and guys like Ryan Murphy, (Paul) Duffield and (David) Mundy have undergone a great transition in their bodies, so I would expect a lot of improvement in them."
