GOLD Coast's revamped midfield has young key forward Peter Wright salivating.

Wright took major strides forward last season, kicking 27 goals from his 17 games, and he expects further improvement in 2017.

But he'll have a lot of new faces kicking him the ball.

With Jaeger O'Meara (who Wright never played alongside) and Dion Prestia leaving during the off-season, the Suns went shopping to boost their midfield stocks, acquiring Brisbane Lion Pearce Hanley, Adelaide's Jarryd Lyons and Fremantle's Michael Barlow.

They also picked up Will Brodie and Jack Bowes – both of whom will push for round-one berths– in the NAB AFL Draft.

"I think we've had a really good off-season as a club," Wright told AFL.com.au.

"Pearce is already breaking lines and fitting in well.

"His kicking is standing out. He's running from behind and breaking lines and is able to hit targets inside 50.

"Micky Barlow's work-rate … to see him on the track first-hand, he's really setting standards amongst the group.

"I can't wait to play with those guys."

Gold Coast will also welcome back David Swallow to its midfield fold, after the 2014 club champion missed all of last season with knee problems.

Alongside his forward line partner and new co-captain Tom Lynch, Wright was arguably the most exciting story to come out of a tough season for the Suns.

In just his second year, the 203cm powerhouse began to have a major impact on matches, kicking five goals in a win over the Lions and bagging three goals on four other occasions.

He signed a two-year contract extension just before Christmas, tying him to the Suns until the end of the 2019 season.

The 20-year-old took 29 contested marks, good enough for top-30 in the league.

Wright stayed on the Gold Coast for most of his off-season, describing his preparation for 2017 as "meticulous".

He has been a pre-season standout, matching many of the midfielders with his run times.

Wright said his partnership with Lynch and fellow tall Sam Day could only get better.

"Last year I was just finding my feet and getting used to the standards of AFL," he said.

"We need to build on that synergy, build on those minutes together and understand each others' games more and push each other to get better and better with some friendly competition.

"A real focus for us is keeping that isolation.

"I need to focus on being more consistent week to week, (because) I was fading in and out a bit last year. "
