STAR Geelong midfielder Gary Ablett believes the secret to the Cats' continuing success this year lies in a promise the playing group made to get even better after their all-conquering 2007.

Ablett, 24, said the Cats made bettering themselves a firm objective for this season, despite the lofty standards they scaled last year.

"I know we got to the end of last year and we thought, what can we do better this year to improve on last year?" he said, at the AFL Players' Association MVP awards on Monday night.

"I guess the way we looked at it was we wanted to improve the things we did last year.

"I think we definitely have."

The strong team orientation of the Cats was a big factor to their success last year, and in 2008, this has been reflected further with contests between players like Cameron Mooney and Steve Johnson for who can record the most scoring assists.

Ablett said the sharing mentality of the side is something Geelong prides itself on.

"I don't know if there's competitions as such, but the guys go out there and just try to get each other in the game and try and help each other out," he said.

"That's what it really is. We just go out and try and do our bit for the team."

The talented Cat, who picked up the league's MVP award at the Crown function on Monday, said the players were looking forward to a weekend off.

"We had a good win on the weekend so we're happy about that, and we've got the weekend off now and I think the guys are looking forward to that," he said.

"We can freshen up our minds and look forward to whoever we have to play the week after."

He also said he was confident young teammate Brent Prismall will bounce back after being informed he'll require a full knee reconstruction following an injury sustained on Sunday.

"I had a brief chat to him and he's obviously disappointed with what's happened," he said.

"He's a pretty positive guy though so he'll be ok."
