IT'S the selection poser that has intrigued Sydney Swans fans throughout the summer - how will coach Paul Roos fit his four running defenders into the one team?

The return of Tadhg Kennelly and Nick Malceski's strong pre-season form, along with Rhyce Shaw's career-best 2009 and Marty Mattner's reliability has generated plenty of speculation among pre-season track watchers.

The quartet played together for the first time against Essendon at Blacktown Olympic Park last weekend and will reprise their roles against North Melbourne at Narrandera on Friday night.

Mattner said the Swans' selection committee had an unenviable task in managing the four attacking half-backs.

"We've also got four great talls in Lewis Roberts-Thomson, Craig Bolton, Heath Grundy and Teddy Richards, so I don't know how they're going to fit eight into six," he said.

"If we can get three or four of us down back and create that run ... through the midfield and half-back, it's going to be tough for other teams."

Mattner forecast that at least one of the four would need to play regular stints in the midfield if they were all selected.

"I guess that's the luxury of having myself and Rhyce who have played a little bit more on the wing at Collingwood and Adelaide.

"I think it's going to work out well with one of us being able to push up on the wing and create the option of being able to push up into the midfield a bit more."

While Mattner and his mates in defence are looking to provide run in the back half, he was excited at the Swans' pre-season injection of pace at the other end of the ground.

Draftees Lewis Jetta and Gary Rohan, along with trade target Ben McGlynn, have added some much-needed run in attack during the club's impressive pre-season campaign.

"That's what the club looked at getting the draft last year - some more quick, outside players," Mattner said.

"They add some excitement to the footy club, too, which I guess we've missed over the last couple of years. We really haven’t had that player who can take on someone and have a couple of bounces and kick a goal.

"From my perspective, I've really enjoyed watching that and Lewis Jetta and Gary Rohan have done that over the last few weeks in their games."

The Swans complete their pre-season schedule with their NAB Challenge clash against North Melbourne on Friday night and Mattner said the club's preparation had been close to ideal.

"To have the majority of players up and running and doing a full pre-season, you get great confidence," he said.

"We've got a couple of wins and some good form and it looks like this week will be another good test against the Kangaroos, who are going to be at pretty much full strength.

"It'll be great for the team and it's probably the best thing we could have going into round one."

Martin Mattner is a $317,200 defender in this year's Toyota AFL Dream Team.
