A FINAL inspection of the Gabba on Monday morning will determine whether the surface is fit to host the NAB AFL Women's Grand Final between the Brisbane Lions and Adelaide next Saturday.
The Queensland venue held an Adele concert at the start of the month and there have been concerns about the state of the ground after turf had to be re-laid.
AFL chief Gillon McLachlan said more would be known about the inaugural Grand Final venue by lunchtime on Monday.
"We have claim, but if the people (Gabba stadium staff) are saying the turf is not right then we can't do it," McLachlan told SEN, which is simulcast on AFL.com.au every Monday morning.
"There's a final turf inspection [on Monday] morning ."
Stadiums Queensland and an AFL employee will conduct the review of the ground.
"If the recommendation is that it's safe to play there (at the Gabba), then we'll play there," he said.
"If not we'll work it out after that."
Gabba ground staff are concerned the cricket pitches laid in the middle of the ground could suffer significant damage from the AFLW match.
The Gabba pitch was covered and converted into a concert venue for Adele's shows.
"Stadiums are there to be used and I'm not sure groundspeople understand that they are there to prepare the turf so it can be used," McLachlan said.
Metricon Stadium on the Gold Coast is being considered as a backup option, which would see the Grand Final staged as a curtain-raiser before the round one QClash between the Lions and Gold Coast.
"Hopefully we are playing at the Gabba. It will be a great event for football in Queensland," McLachlan said.
