Garland came down awkwardly in a first-quarter marking contest, hyperextending his left knee and instantly grimacing in pain in the club's match against West Coast in Perth on Saturday night.
The Demon backman came back onto the ground for a short time, but was eventually substituted out of the game early in the third term.
Melbourne football manger Josh Mahoney told AFL.com.au the bone bruising diagnosis was a positive result, considering the type of injury that could have eventuated.
"Scans have revealed Col has escaped any major damage and we'll assess him during the week about whether he will be available for this weekend," Mahoney said.
Mahoney said the Demons would err on the side of caution if there were any risk attached with Garland running out against the Kangaroos on Saturday night.
Meanwhile, Melbourne has re-signed Rohan Bail, Aidan Riley and Dean Terlich.
Bail has enjoyed a consistent season with the Demons, missing just one match, taking his overall tally to 64 matches.
Riley has played eight games in his first year with the Dees after playing 12 matches with Adelaide from 2011-13.
The midfielder had a limited pre-season due to breaking his leg playing for the Crows in round 15 last year.
He joined Melbourne as a delisted free agent.
Terlich has played 35 matches, including 15 this year.
