AFL CEO Andrew Demetriou has defended the surface at Etihad Stadium in the wake of Western Bulldog Shaun Higgins’ ankle injury on Sunday.

Higgins is set for at least three weeks on the sidelines after rolling his ankle when the turf slipped under his foot against Collingwood.

The League’s football department will investigate the surface at Etihad Stadium after a request from the Bulldogs, but Demetriou said he wasn’t bothered by the footage of Higgins’ injury.

“No, because I could make an argument to say that there are injuries that happen at lots of grounds,” he said on Tuesday.

“But having said that, there has been a request, as I understand it, from the Western Bulldogs to have a look at that situation. We will do that; we take those requests very seriously.

“Adrian Anderson, through the football operations department, has formed a group that’s looking at issues relating to surface and if there’s any correlation with injuries, and I daresay that group will obviously take that request into account.”

Demetriou said the turf at Etihad Stadium was “absolutely” safe and said the League was committed to providing a safe on-field environment for its players.

“We are a professional code, if not the largest sporting code in this country, and any issues relating to occupational health and safety, we take seriously,” he said.

“We go through all the proper checks and balances… and we will continue to do so.”
