THE FUTURE playing home of West Coast and Fremantle will be decided in Saturday's WA state election, with voters facing a decision between the planned Burswood site and a proposed alternative in Subiaco.
The serving Liberal government has an established plan to build Perth's new stadium in Burswood to the city's east, and the project is likely to go ahead with premier Colin Barnett strongly favoured to be re-elected.
However, the long-running stadium debate has become a campaign issue, with Labor promising to scrap that plan if elected and build the new stadium in Subiaco's Kitchener Park, next to Patersons Stadium.
The opposition has declared its plan would save $250 million and still produce a stadium ready for the 2018 season.
A 2007 report found Kitchener Park to be a more suitable location, however, the Liberal government pressed on with its plan for the Burswood site, near James Packer's Crown Casino.
The proposed Burswood stadium would have an initial capacity of 60,000 and the potential to eventually expand to 80,000.
While West Coast and Fremantle have avoided publicly stating a preference, Eagles coach John Worsfold recently threw his weight behind the Burswood plan.
"It seems to be that the stadium we need has got the space and capacity at Burswood," Worsfold told ABC radio last month.
"From what I read, there is a lot of restrictions at Subiaco to what we can do, and in terms of developing further in the future.
"This is such a massive investment for the state that we need to put it in the spot that means in 20 years down the track we are not saying we want to do this but we can't because we are restricted."
