Brad Scott and Hawthorn coach Alastair Clarkson have come face-to-face a little earlier than expected after helping the AFL Coaches Association and the Australian Defence Force encourage men to take a proactive approach to their physical and mental health.

Vice Chief of the Defence Force Lieutenant General David Hurley and Major General Paul Alexander joined the coaching pair along with AFL Coaches Association chief Danny Frawley at Etihad Stadium on Wednesday to launch the new partnership.

“All men in the community need to show courage and take the initiative when it comes to their health,” Scott told kangaroos.com.au.

“It’s important to develop a good relationship with a GP and visit them regularly to prevent any health issues before they become a bigger problem.”

All hostilities were put aside ahead of North Melbourne’s clash with Hawthorn on Sunday in Tasmania and Frawley appreciated the coaches taking time out of their busy schedules for the cause.

“That’s what will make this new partnership between the ADF and the AFL coaches association so strong. We all have a role in supporting our mates.”

ADF Surgeon General, Major General Alexander said “Many of the issues which confront players and coaches during and at the end of their careers are similar to those which confront members of the armed forces”

All AFL coaches will undergo routine health checks and encourage all men, no matter how healthy they think they are, to do the same.
