Port Adelaide president Greg Boulton has received a fitting reward for his outstanding service to South Australian football.

Boulton was honoured with the SANFL’s League Life Membership at its Annual General Meeting on Tuesday night.

Power chief executive John James congratulated Boulton, along with the other recipients, including former Port Adelaide player Peter Woite and current SANFL commissioner David Shipway.

“Everyone at the Power joins me in congratulating Greg,” James said. “His commitment and strong leadership has been a driving force behind the club’s success and it’s great to see his achievements recognised by the SANFL with Life Membership.”

Boulton said the award was a reflection of the club as a whole over the past two decades.

“It is certainly a great honour to be awarded Life Membership of the SANFL,” Boulton said.

“The award is a measure of what our club has achieved with many people working together as a team during the last 20 years.”

It is an award that is bestowed to just a select few. In fact, Boulton has become only the eighth SANFL League Life Member from the Port Adelaide Football Club since the state’s football body began awarding the honour in 1907.

He follows C. Hayter, A.R. McLean, C. Darwent, F. Williams, D. Boyd, J. Cahill and M. Williams, along with Woite. The club has a number of other SANFL Player Life Members.

Boulton has been president of the Port Adelaide Football Club since its SANFL days in 1992 and was an integral part of the club winning the state’s second AFL licence in 1995 that saw the club enter the AFL in 1997. He was vice-president of the club through much of the 80s.

Boulton has steered the club throughout its time in the AFL, making him one of the competition’s longest serving presidents. He is one of two members of the club’s Board (along with Dr Tony Hobby) who have been with the club throughout its time in the AFL.
