As investigations continue Thompson remains in the spotlight because of his part in bringing controversial fitness boss Dean Robinson to the football club.
Robinson remains stood down, as ADSADA, the AFL and former Telstra boss Ziggy Switkowski continue their inquiries.
Hird said Thompson played a vital role in the Bombers 35-point win over Adelaide in the season opener.
"He was sitting about 30 millimeters behind my shoulder, right in my ear the whole game. (He was) quite influential last night in the way the box was run," Hird told SEN Radio's Crunch Time program.
"His role has changed slightly, in that he has a lot more to do with our recruitment and development which we think is such a huge part of the game.
"But certainly training and match day come this time of year he is very influential."
