HAWTHORN defender Josh Gibson says the disappointment of letting two premiership points slip in Friday night's draw with St Kilda clouded his optimism about the Hawks' consistently good form.

It came after a strong performance at Etihad Stadium from a much-improved Hawks outfit that many considered unlucky to not claim the four points against one of the premiership fancies.

Hawthorn had the game all but won until an unlikely and unusual interchange infringement against fellow defender Grant Birchall in the dying stages helped swing the momentum back the Saints’ way.

“I think when we sit down during the week and look over it you’re spot on [we let that go],” Gibson said.

“We played a draw but in terms of us playing good solid footy, that’s great that we’re back up there, but I’m not really feeling that way at the minute.”

The result continued an impressive run of performances from Hawthorn in recent weeks after many discounted its finals hopes after a lacklustre start to the year.

Starting off the season with just one win from its first eight matches, the Hawks have now won eight and drawn one of their past 10 and seriously challenged reigning premiers Geelong.

For Gibson, Friday night’s draw marked just his fifth in the brown and gold with a badly injured hamstring hampering his season.

After moving from North Melbourne at the end of last year, Gibson tore his hamstring off the bone in round three and was forced to miss 11 matches.

With such a lengthy spell on the sidelines, Gibson said he was still figuring out how he fit into his new side’s structure.

“I’m still really learning, I’ve played five games or something now so the key for me now is going to be able to string games together and work out one another’s game styles,” he said.

“Obviously I’ve come from a  different club so I’m still learning but it’s been a real positive the way the boys have gone about it in the second half of the season and I’m excited to be out there with them.”

Coincidentally, Gibson tore his hamstring the same weekend as St Kilda skipper Nick Riewoldt.

The pair was given plenty of time to test out one another on Friday night, matching up on each other for most of the match.

“We sort of had an agreement if we played on each other we’d take it easy,” Gibson joked.

“I spoke to him a little bit after the game, we’ve kept in touch since we both had the same surgery.”

The surgery looks to have paid dividends for Gibson who has grown in confidence in recent weeks.

Gibson was among Hawthorn’s best opposed to Riewoldt on Friday night and along with fellow recruit Shaun Burgoyne, looks to have added some extra polish to a quality Hawthorn side that is hopeful of pushing deep into September.
