COLLINGWOOD expects Nathan Brown to recover in time to face the Sydney Swans despite the key defender playing for less than a quarter of his side’s Queen’s Birthday win over Melbourne.

Brown left the field with about 20 minutes into the clash after jarring a knee.

Collingwood football manager Geoff Walsh said scans this week had cleared the 20-year-old of any structural damage.

Given that news, the Magpies are hopeful their backman will be fit to take on the Sydney Swans at ANZ Stadium on June 20 in what has become an annual blockbuster of the AFL’s split round.

“There’s just a bit of bleeding from his quad down into the knee capsule but our docs are fairly confident that with the week off he should be right for selection for the Swans game,” Walsh said.

While Brown shouldn’t miss a match, the news isn’t as good for John McCarthy.

Just as the Magpies’ injury list was virtually eroded, the youngster’s miserable 2009 has continued after he injured a hamstring in the VFL at the weekend.

The midfielder/forward has been plagued by injury and illness this season, with hamstring, knee and shoulder complaints forcing him to miss the large majority of the year.

“It’s only a slight strain but it’s certainly bad enough to keep him out for probably a couple of weeks,” Walsh said.

“It’s on his other leg this time; not the leg that he had injured. He’s had some scans, both on his back and on his hamstring and it’s only a slight strain.

“But it’s something that’ll set him back and it’s not something he needed, obviously.”
