Williams was drafted to Hawthorn at pick 43 in the 2000 AFL Draft. He played as a small forward where he kicked 247 goals throughout his 111-game career, including three goals in the 2008 Grand Final.
Williams topped the Hawks’ goalkicking list in 2005 and 2006, and was traded to Essendon in late 2009 where he spent the remainder of his AFL career.
Hawks Coach Alastair Clarkson congratulated Williams on his AFL career and thanked him for his contribution to the Club and its premiership history.
“All at Hawthorn Football Club would like to congratulate Mark on his fantastic AFL career, which we were sad to learn has come to a close.”
“Mark was a very gifted player with natural flair and a great instinctive sense around goal.”
“He will especially be remembered for his contribution to our 2008 premiership team, and because of that will always have a special place in Hawthorn history and in the hearts of Hawks fans.”
