We did a few clinics with the kids and showed off our cricket skills. We finished off the camp with a bit of fly fishing which was enormous fun.
That was the highlight for me, the fly fishing. We went out to Natone Fly Fishery near Burnie. I’d never gone fly fishing before and I was pretty happy to catch one. A few of the boys reeled them in so we were all quite proud of ourselves.
I’ve done two community camps in previous years and this was the most enjoyable so far.
We spent time in Burnie in the middle of the day as well as Ulverstone, so we got to see a bit of Tasmania.
I was in a group with Jarryd Morton, Beau Dowler, Jarryd Roughead, Campbell Brown, Taylor Duryea and Jarrod Kayler-Thomson. Roughy and Campbell were the two most popular with the kids.
There were a couple who recognised me, but most of the attention was going to the two premiership players.
Every time we go to Tassie I notice the support for Hawthorn is growing. We had a dinner function that apparently sold out pretty quickly. It is great to see the supporters come down and meet the boys.
And it’s important for us to meet the fans too. They show a lot of support for the footy club so it is important to get down there and give back to the community.
It was great to get around with the boys, especially Browny who is quite a character. He kept singing in the back of the bus; he loves his Black Eyed Peas at the moment so we got to hear a few of their tunes. It certainly livened up the bus trips and might be a sign of things to come for our road trips this year.
