SYDNEY coach John Longmire has revealed co-captain Dane Rampe was unaware that shaking a goalpost was against AFL rules.

Longmire also revealed the club spoke to Rampe on Saturday morning about the defender's bizarre behavior during Sydney's Friday night win over Essendon at the SCG.

"He [Dane] said, 'I genuinely didn't know the rule', and I said, 'Well, you do now so it might be best to stay away from goalposts in the future'," Longmire said on Monday.

"I had no idea (it had happened) until after the game.

"It was a pretty brief conversation (on Saturday morning), but it's fair to say I wouldn't be expecting him to be doing it (again) in the future."

Rampe's banter with umpire Jacob Mollison has also come under scrutiny after the Sydney defender told Mollison he talks "like a little girl" just seconds after he was pinged for holding the ball.

"It was a poor choice of words from [Dane] but he's a quality person and a quality character," Longmire said.

"Obviously there's been a big focus on it and that’s what the footy world is (like) these days, you play Friday night and the focus is on (you).

"But he'll learn from it, we always learn whether it’s the coaches or players, you're always learning, and we'll address it and move on.

"Dane has been fantastic for us this season and he was brilliant again on the weekend, particularly in the last quarter.

"He made a couple of mistakes during the course of the game, but he's having a ripping year and it's a shame that we're talking about (the goalpost incident) and not the fact that he's been in sensational form."

Rampe released a video via the Swans' Twitter account later on Monday afternoon, apologising for his actions in both instances.
