Garlett has had an impressive season for South Fremantle in the WAFL and is in contention as a first-round selection at November's draft.
A rebounding, attacking defender, Smith made the under-18 All Australian team last season as a 17-year-old but has struggled for the same consistency in 2014.
Among the group of 11 smaller players invited to the four-day testing at Etihad Stadium were two upgraded prospects, Teia Miles and Toby McLean.
The pair was invited to the Victorian state combine last month but have been upgraded to the national list after strong form in the TAC Cup in recent weeks.
Miles is the son of Geoff, who played 122 matches for Collingwood, West Coast and Geelong from 1982-92, but not enough for any club to qualify as a father-son pick.
Tall defender Oscar McDonald and medium forward Bailey Dale have also received upgrades to the national list this week.
