FREMANTLE has given Shaun McManus a fitting send-off, comfortably seeing off West Coast to win the western derby by 33 points at Subiaco Oval on Sunday.

Fremantle set up its win with a nine-goal rampage in the first term, piling on eight goals in the final 19 minutes to turn an 11-point deficit into a 31-point lead at the first change.

It increased its lead in the second and third quarters before easing off in the final term to win 17.14 (116) to 12.11 (83).

McManus, Fremantle's last surviving foundation player, improved as the match went on. He set up Luke McPharlin's third goal in the opening quarter, landed six tackles, took 10 marks and had 21 touches.

McPharlin kicked five goals, leading the procession as Freo roared away in the first term. He took seven marks for the quarter, most of which were contested or on the lead, and kicked 3.1.

Pavlich’s outstanding performance saw him collect his second consecutive Ross Glendinning Medal.

Fremantle got the jump on West Coast, with Josh Carr posting the first goal of the match with less than two minutes on the clock.

But the Eagles soon settled, with Ashley Hansen looking dangerous in the forward 50. Hansen pumped the ball in for Mark LeCras to open West Coast’s account and a minute later followed up when he brilliantly read the ball off a pack to kick his first.

When David Wirrpanda kicked truly from a set shot inside 50, West Coast appeared to be gaining the upper hand.

But Pavlich single-handedly ripped the game from the Eagles’ grasp, kicking a hat-trick of goals in a powerhouse eight minutes of football. McPharlin was proving a handful for Beau Wilkes and also finished the term with three goals.

Fremantle had turned an 11-point deficit into a comfortable 31-point lead by quarter time, posting their best ever first-quarter score in a western derby: 9.2.

West Coast came out strongly early in the second quarter but a string of missed shots damaged its cause. A series of unforced skill errors and poor decisions inside defensive 50 then allowed Fremantle to regain its momentum.

Quinten Lynch provided a rare highlight, posting his second 65-metre goal in consecutive weeks, this time from the boundary line.

But the traffic was mainly heading in the opposite direction, with Pavlich and McPharlin each posting their fourth goals to extend Fremantle’s lead to 41 points at the long break.

West Coast lifted its work rate in the third quarter, mainly through the efforts of Dean Cox in the ruck and Steven Armstrong through the midfield.

LeCras came to life with back-to-back goals and Ben McKinley quickly followed with his first to give West Coast some hope of a comeback.

But McPharlin ended the West Coast charge with his fifth goal and Fremantle closed out the quarter with goals to Kepler Bradley and Carr to hold a 45-point advantage at the final break.

With the game comfortably under control, the final quarter became an opportunity for the Fremantle-dominated crowd to pay homage to McManus. The retiring icon gathered an impressive 21 possessions, 10 marks and six tackles for the game, each applauded warmly by the Fremantle faithful.

Pavlich deserved his best-on-ground accolade and was well supported by McManus, Byron Schammer, McPharlin, David Mundy, Michael Johnson and Rhys Palmer.

Dean Cox battled willingly all day for West Coast and just shaded Aaron Sandilands in the ruck duels. LeCras was West Coast’s most potent forward, Steven Armstrong worked hard through the midfield with Brad Ebert, while David Wirrpanda used his touches effectively.
