LEVI Greenwood says his rapid improvement as an AFL midfielder has come mainly because of the faith shown in him by his coach.

Greenwood starred in North Melbourne’s 10-point win over Melbourne on Sunday, gathering 39 possessions as his side’s best midfielder.

He says the support of coach Brad Scott gave him belief in his own abilities.

“Brad puts a lot of confidence in everyone to go out and have a crack. You don’t feel like you’re held back. At the start of the year I was tagging a bit but now in the last few games I’ve been told to go out there, win your own ball and see what happens because that’s what he wants me to become in the end, a ball-winning midfielder,” Greenwood said.

“It’s good to get the leash off and have a bit of a run around and try to get my own ball.”

The match was the final time Kangaroos forward Corey Jones took to an AFL field.

It was just his second senior game for the season but he was a crucial part of it, kicking two valuable goals in the final term to set up the win.

Greenwood paid tribute to the man who took him under his wing when he was drafted from SANFL team Port Adelaide.

“You know he tries as hard as he can whenever he’s in the team, especially when it’s his last game,” he said.

“When I first came here I stayed with Corey for a couple of months. He was a bit of a mentor when I first came in. He’s always around to talk to and he’s a good leader.”

Greenwood had a breakout year in 2010, playing 17 games, including the round 11 win over the Brisbane Lions where he kicked the winning goal.

But there is no chance he will be resting on his laurels as he already has detailed plans for his 2011 pre-season.

“I’ll be working on my kicking and my vision and getting a bit more composure with the ball. Sometimes I just blaze away when I get around 60-70m. I just need to spot up the targets.”
