FREMANTLE looks set to welcome back feisty midfielder Byron Schammer for Sunday's clash with Port Adelaide, but Luke McPharlin remains in doubt with a calf injury.

Schammer, who has missed Fremantle's last three games with a calf injury, trained strongly on Tuesday and is available for selection alongside Brett Peake (ankle) who missed last week's loss to the Bulldogs.

McPharlin jogged lightly apart from the main group at Subiaco Oval and coach Mark Harvey said he would wait until Thursday's training session before he made a decision on the forward, who has missed Fremantle's last two matches.

The coach said McPharlin had not suffered a setback and he was still in line to face the Power.

"Schammer and Peake will be available for selection – McPharlin's not too far away," Harvey said after training on Wednesday morning.

"Calf injuries tend to take their time and if you bring them back too early then you run the risk of it being long-term."

Fremantle will be forced to make at least one change to the side that lost to the Bulldogs by 31 points after small forward Hayden Ballantyne had his forceful front-on contact charge upheld by the AFL tribunal.

Fremantle could have accepted a one-match ban with an early guilty plea but chose to contest. Ballantyne will now miss this week's clash with the Power and next week's trip to face Melbourne at the MCG.

"Our outlook on why we challenged the tribunal was we thought it was below the shoulder," Harvey said. "It didn't go that way and you run that risk.

"We obviously knew the consequences, plus we had the advice from our advocates that they thought there was a case there. Hayden himself was also keen to pursue it.

"We're going to miss him over the next week or two."

Meanwhile, Harvey denied key midfielder Paul Hasleby was out of favour because of his ongoing contract dispute.

The 28-year-old has requested a two-year contract beyond this season, but the club has only offered him a one-year extension.

Hasleby played 65 per cent of the game against the Bulldogs and 69 per cent of the round 17 western derby.

Harvey said that should lift to 80 per cent against the Power this week and he denied Hasleby's lack of ground time was in response to his contract deadlock.

"That's one of those lovely stories that's done by external people," he said.

"As a coach I stay away from those sorts of things (contract negotiations). I just play the mediator.

"If you remember two weeks ago he had a calf injury that was nearly going to put him out – we need to make sure that doesn't re-occur."
