Hawthorn Football Club today announced its partnership with the Berwick Football Club women’s team.

The Berwick Hawks field two senior women’s teams in the Victorian Women’s Football League (VWFL) and will compete this season in a new set of guernseys emblazoned with the Hawk.

The Hawks' association with Berwick Football Club goes back nearly 40 years, when Michael Tuck arrived at Glenferrie oval.

The Hawks’ sponsorship of the Berwick Hawks will help with seasonal operating costs such as:

  • Alternative training venues such as pools and sourcing pre-season ovals
  • Trainers and trainers materials
  • Transport costs to opposition venues
  • Uniform and equipment costs (shorts, socks, footballs)
  • Help send players to annual interstate carnivals
  • Costs associated with training players to undertake off-field roles such as coaching

The Berwick Hawks believes the partnership with the Hawks will continue to highlight the growth of Women’s football in Victoria, particularly in the South-East suburban corridor.

A component of the sponsorship agreement is for Hawthorn to provide players (where possible) to help with training clinics. In addition, an initiative by Berwick’s senior coach Norm Berry will see two interchange spots made available on the senior team each week for prospective women players from the local Youth Girls competition.

These players will be offered the opportunity to train and play a game then return to their local clubs to share the knowledge gained.

This will in no doubt benefit the VWFL in coming years.
