Cheer Cheer boomed from the speakers as over 100 children sang along at the top of their lungs, and jumped up and down to try and catch a glimpse of their favourite Swans.
The visit was part of the Team Swans Schools Program, where Swans players visit schools across New South Wales to grow awareness of Aussie Rules, provide training gear for students and teachers, and encourage attendance at Swans home matches.
After a quick chat about their backgrounds and experience at the Club, Jetta and Mumford showed the kids how to kick a drop punt and how to mark a footy.
At times trickier than a hostile media conference, the curly questions came hard and fast as the boys were asked how many girlfriends they had, where to sit on match day when it rains and why the Swans were “better than Collingwood”!
Jetta explained his first memory of footy - “I was about four years old, and I remember wearing shorts and no shirt and no shoes, and I reckon I kicked three goals”; and ‘Mummy’ talked about his favourite game of footy - “It was my first game and it was a really tough one. We were down by six goals but we managed to come back and won by a point”.
Jack discussed Club rituals, including the way new players are welcomed to the team after their first win by being doused in Powerade during a rousing rendition of the Club song. Recent inductees Mumford and Jetta winced as the story was told, with Mummy explaining to the kids how much it stung his eyes. “Nothing’s better than showering in Powerade,” Jetta quipped.
They were thanked for their visit by a young school ambassador, who received raucous laughter from the players as wished them well in “smashing the Cats” on the weekend. The players were then farewelled with another round of ‘Cheer cheer’ - Mummy and Jetta both later admitting they might have mumbled their way through a verse or two as they both continue to learn all the lines. Here’s hoping they’ll get another chance to practice the song on Sunday!
Thanks Darlington!
