NEW ESSENDON midfielder Brent Prismall has taken his first tentative steps towards a return to senior football in 2009 after resuming running earlier this week.

The former Cat required a full knee reconstruction in September after rupturing an anterior cruciate ligament in Geelong’s qualifying final win over St Kilda.

But this week Prismall, 22, took a further stride in his rehabilitation, adding in a new string to his bow of pool work and stationary handball drills when he was able to break into a slow jog.

While the Bombers are reluctant to put any time frame on a return date for their highly-prized recruit – who they attained from the Cats during trade period in exchange for pick 39 – they will not be rushing the man they believe can become a key component of their young, developing on-ball division.

“It is an important step simply because he can feel like he is making progress,” Essendon assistant coach Gary O’Donnell told essendonfc.com.au.

“Recovering from significant injuries can be a slog and each small thing you can tick off along the way gives him a lift, and everyone around him.

“There is that added element for Brent in that he is at a new club and he is very keen to get out amongst the group and be a part of it. That will frustrate him but it is important we follow the medical advice and get him right for the long-term.

“We have noticed Brent is extremely diligent when it comes to his rehab. He has been doing static skills with a real intensity and purpose and taking others with him. We think that is a really good sign.”

Prismall will continue his rehabilitation with the rest of the Essendon list at the Bombers’ week long, pre-Christmas training camp at Coffs Harbour from next Wednesday.
