ESSENDON will go ahead with its plans to rename the Coventry end at Etihad Stadium the 'Lloyd end' but arch-rival Collingwood is determined to make it just a one-off.
The Bombers wish to honour former captain Matthew Lloyd by draping a banner over the Coventry end for each of their home games from this Sunday.
However, resistance will come from the Magpies, who Coventry represented in 306 games.
Collingwood president Eddie McGuire said his club was not happy with Essendon's decision and that it was disrespectful of the champion goalkicker's career.
"In celebrating Matthew Lloyd's career, no fair-minded person would feel it appropriate to denigrate the contribution of someone the calibre of Gordon Coventry," McGuire said in a statement on Thursday.
"We acknowledge that this was not the intention of either party, but unfortunately it would've been the result. As such, all three groups, in the spirit of commemorating the heroics of both stars, will meet to come up with an appropriate compromise for Essendon's next home game."
Collingwood had also expressed disappointment that it wasn't notified of the change by the AFL, Essendon or Etihad Stadium.
Essendon confirmed it would discuss its long-term plans with Collingwood next week, and that it would have its tribute for Lloyd at this week's game against Fremantle.
"Essendon is committed to creating a home-ground feel by honouring one of our true champions. We should not forget that Matthew Lloyd played in the first ever game at Etihad and has kicked the most goals there," chief executive Ian Robson said in a statement.
"The club is responding to a call by our fans to make Etihad Stadium feel more like Essendon's home ground. We began the process last year and introduced many changes at the stadium and will continue to do so in 2010 and beyond.
"The idea for a 'Lloyd' end at Etihad was first publicly raised in September last year and we have been working with Etihad Stadium on this project since then. We have been very open about our plans and we know all Essendon fans share our excitement."
