A FOUR-GOAL haul to Brendan Fevola wasn't enough to lift Carlton over the line as Fremantle warmed up for the home-and-away season with a 43-point win in the NAB Challenge match at Bunbury on Saturday night.

The Blues, boasting a near full strength side including skipper Chris Judd, were outgunned by the youthful Freo side 20.6 (126) to 12.11 (83).

Fremantle skipper Matthew Pavlich and midfielder Brett Peake booted three goals apiece for the home side, while David Mundy, Dean Solomon, Michael Johnson and Stephen Hille chipped in with two each.

But Fremantle coach Mark Harvey's experiment of using Chris Tarrant as a defender may have come to an end after the former Pie was soundly beaten by Fevola.

Chris Yarran kicked two goals for the Blues, while Marc Murphy, Kade Simpson and Jordan Russell provided solid service in a losing cause.

Despite having one fewer shot on goal in the opening quarter, Fremantle registered an accurate 6.1 to take a 14-point lead into the first break.

Carlton failed to make any inroads in the second quarter as Fremantle took a handy 19-point advantage into the long break, with Pavlich and Mundy kicking two goals apiece for the half.

Fremantle speedster Peake popped up for two goals in the third quarter but Fevola, who kicked three goals in the opening half, added another to his tally to keep the margin at a manageable 20 points entering the final change.

But it was all Fremantle in the final term as they kicked six goals to two to secure the easy win.

Carlton's Simon Wiggins was reported for rough conduct against young Fremantle player Greg Broughton in the second quarter.

"I think our start was pretty good, we really peppered the goals and just missed opportunities," Carlton coach Brett Ratten said.

"I suppose when you come interstate you need to put an ascendency on the board and get a gap to get some confidence.

"We shot ourselves in the foot ... and three goals in four or five minutes swung it the other way."

Harvey said he felt his team was starting to gel.

"What happens over the four or five games that you have got is the personnel changes enormously, and that has been the case over the last month," Harvey said.

"We are starting to see some of that continuity now.

"There are different attitudes that happen in the last practice game, some players are tidying up their game, some are pressing for selection, some are avoiding injury whether you like it or not.

"It can be a little bit misleading some of the form, albeit I was really happy what we applied to Carlton."
