ALEX Fasolo’s frustrating run with injury has continued, with the Magpie to miss the next 2-3 weeks after having surgery to remove a screw in his foot.

Fasolo, 22, has played seven senior games this season, having missed a fortnight with a toe complaint sustained against Essendon on ANZAC Day.

He missed the majority of the 2013 season due to foot problems.

"Alex been getting a bit of foot soreness for the past 4-5 weeks and it has been generated by one of the screws in his foot from his navicular operation, so that will be removed today,” the club’s director of football Rodney Eade told collingwoodfc.com.au.

“He has got three screws in there, so the surgeon is really confident that it won’t impact on his foot.

“Hopefully he will be back in 2-3 weeks.”

Fasolo’s surgery compounds a bad recent run for the Magpies on the injury front, just as the club reaches a tough stage of their draw, with games against Hawthorn, Carlton and Gold Coast in the next three weeks.

They have lost All Australian defender Ben Reid for another four weeks after he nicked a quad at training on Friday, just as he was nearing a senior comeback.

Reid is yet to play a senior game this season after injuring his calf on the eve of the season.

Collingwood coach Nathan Buckley said it was a frustrating time for Reid.

"That's disappointing for him and disappointing for us," Buckley said.

Collingwood will also be without Tyson Goldsack and Nick Maxwell once again, meaning they will be severely undermanned for the clash with reigning premier Hawthorn on Saturday at the MCG.

The Pies are likely to regain premiership midfielder Dayne Beams, who withdrew from the clash with the Western Bulldogs on Sunday morning, after he failed to satisfy himself he was fit enough to get through four quarters.

But Steele Sidebottom will be missing once again as he serves the final week of his three-match suspension for striking Mav Weller.

Hawthorn has also been beset with injury problems but Buckley knows they will be a formidable test.

"Talent is one part of it but it's how you perform as a team," Buckley said on Tuesday morning.

Buckley said any possibility the Magpies' could exploit the Hawks' undersized defence would depend on the Pies’ ability to use ball well and move it quickly.

"They (Hawthorn) are a well drilled unit. They play their roles particularly well. No matter who is in that back six they are going to ask questions of us about our ability to separate them and give our tall targets good supply," Buckley said.

Buckley also said that whether Collingwood's disappointing loss to the Western Bulldogs on Sunday was an aberration would be dependent on what the Magpies produced for the rest of the season.

Collingwood have not beaten Hawthorn in five clashes since the 2011 preliminary final.
