GEELONG has roped-off parts of Skilled Stadium at training this week to try to replicate the conditions they will face against the Sydney Swans at the SCG on Saturday night.

The Cats haven't played at the SCG since the semi-final of 2005 in which Swan Nick Davis' heroics got the Swans narrowly over the line, so they have trained specifically this week for the smallest playing surface in the AFL.

Forward Steve Johnson said the players had run some drills on Wednesday that were shorter than usual.

"On different grounds you like to move the ball in different ways," Johnson said on Thursday.

"Against Fremantle [at Patersons Stadium in round two] we probably tried to use the space a little bit more, but at the SCG it's only two big kicks to get it deep into the forward line.

"We know there's going to be a lot of contested ball on Saturday night and our big focus will be getting numbers around the ball all the time."

Johnson has been a consistent goal-scorer in recent meetings with the Swans, and booted six when the teams last met.

This season he's added another string to his bow by spending more time in the midfield.

"I think it's been a really good challenge," he said.

"I've been putting my hand up for a couple of years to get more of a run up there.

"Probably my body hasn't allowed me to do that in the past, but this year I've done most of the pre-season and I just see it as a real challenge.

"I still play a fair bit down forward, but just getting a run up there is good."

The Cats have won eight consecutive games against the Swans, and this week will come up against their former teammate Shane Mumford, with the Swans ruckman keen to prove a point.

"The Cats are a great side and it is going to be a massive test to see where we're at," Mumford said.

"We'll have to play even better than we have been and see how we go.

"I know Geelong made their home ground a fortress and we're aiming to do the same thing with the SCG up here.

"We're hoping a big crowd will turn out and help us get over the line."
