COLLINGWOOD rounded out its pre-season campaign in impressive fashion by downing Port Adelaide by 81 points in a one-sided affair at Mount Gambier on Saturday afternoon.

The Power kicked the opening goal of the game, but the Pies piled on five of the next six majors to set-up a handy 24-point lead at quarter time.

Port Adelaide clawed back with two early goals to start the second term, but Collingwood kept coming.

Luke Ball and John Anthony (three goals), Tarkyn Lockyer, Paul Medhurst, Dale Thomas and Scott Pendlebury (two goals), and Leon Davis were instrumental as the Magpies extended their lead to 37 points at half time.

Midfielders Robbie Gray and Scott Harding sparked the Power early in the third term, but their efforts were not enough to combat the Collingwood onslaught.

Port Adelaide appeared flat after three weeks on the road, but Collingwood finished the game full of running, kicking a further 13 goals in the second half to secure the win 27.16 (178) to 15.7 (97).

Magpies assistant coach Mark Neeld said his club was in good shape heading into the round one clash with the Western Bulldogs on March 28.

“In terms of the games that we’ve played we’ve had three victories and lost by one point in the other game,” Neeld said.

“The majority of our list have been able to play three of the four practice games, which is what we set out to do, and we’ve played 37 players in an AFL game across the four-week period.

“But the answer will come when the real season starts and you have your win-loss ratio after a few games. It’s only then you can really reflect if the pre-season has been successful.”

Gray led the way for Port Adelaide, while Daniel Motlop and Warren Tredrea each chipped in with three goals.

Neither side reported any injuries.
