Emerging midfielder Jarryd Lyons answers the tough questions in this quick Q&A for afc.com.au...

How would you describe coach Brenton Sanderson in a few words?

Funny, but also intense at times. He’s very funny and makes the group laugh, but he can be intimidating. He loves his weights too…

What’s your nickname?

‘Gazza’ or ‘Gaz’ after Garry Lyon. That’s the main one.

Who is the best prankster at the Club?

Matty Jaensch and Tex (Taylor) Walker.

Who are your best mates at the Club?

I get along with Lewis Johnston pretty well. We’ve just moved into a new place together. He’s good for a laugh and talks a bit of dribble. Most of the second-year boys like Brodie Smith, Sam Martyn and Sam Shaw I get along with well.

What’s your favourite sport outside footy?

Definitely, golf. I just joined up at West Lakes Golf Club. There are a few boys from the Club down there, who like to have a hit regularly. I’m not too bad. I play off (a handicap of) about 10 at the moment, so I’m getting there. I’ve been playing almost since I could walk.

Can you tell us about your family?

I’ve got a younger brother and a younger sister. We’re a pretty sporting family. My sister plays and coaches netball and my brother Corey is into his footy and cricket. Corey’s only 13, but hopefully he’ll be around at a high level in a few years whether it’s footy or cricket. He’s playing at St Peters back in Melbourne, but I reckon he’ll be a superstar.

What was your first job?

I didn’t have many jobs, but I did work as a butcher’s clean-up boy for a little while. It was pretty eye opening … and I’m definitely keen to stick to footy.

What’s the last book you read?

It was one of Lance Armstrong’s books. It was probably the best book I’ve ever read and also the last one I read.
