PORT Adelaide pair Brett Eddy and Dan Houston could be in line for a round one debut after they were nominated as pre-season rookie upgrades. 

The 27-year-old Eddy has been turning heads during the JLT Community Series, finishing his pre-season with a five-goal haul against Hawthorn last week.

The forward was signed as a rookie from SANFL club South Adelaide last year, after finishing 2016 as the league's leading goal-kicker with 74.

He had previously played for Collingwood's VFL side in 2011, before tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his knee.

Coach Ken Hinkley told Port Adelaide's website Eddy is a natural footballer and a smart player.

"It's hard not to like Brett's story. It's one of persistence, and at every point I've spoken to him he's wanted the opportunity and chance to prove himself," Hinkley said.

"He's done that all the way through the pre-season to the point that he's an upgraded rookie and a chance to make his debut in round one."

Houston was signed as a rookie in 2015 from Oakleigh Chargers, where he was a co-captain.

He managed only 10 SANFL games for Port Adelaide Magpies in 2016 after battling with injury.

The forward played in two JLT Community Series matches this year.

"Dan shows what can be achieved from a good pre-season," Hinkley said.

"His poise and composure down there has stood out, as has his leadership. He's a kid who leads in what he does."
