THE SCRUTINY and criticism that has followed the Saints this season is not unwelcome or unwanted by coach Ross Lyon.

Panned following losses to Geelong and the Western Bulldogs in recent weeks, St Kilda responded to outclass Essendon and improve its record to three wins and two losses.

And Lyon says he is happy to have the extra attention in victory or defeat.

"We love the passion about St Kilda," he said. "We love that we’re a club that gets talked about.

"It drives a lot of emotion, there is expectation. There are some clubs that would love to get talked about like the Saints. We’d rather that than no one talking about us and not being in the papers."

The Saints beat Essendon by 36 points on Friday night and while they led all night, they did concede six consecutive goals to the Bombers in the third term.

Lyon said the comeback showed how dangerous Essendon could be when given a sniff.

"I think they were very efficient," he said. "They kicked six straight off eight entries, which was a worry for us.

"We just played helter skelter footy and turned it over a bit and they were good enough to capitalise … they will hurt you, Essendon, if you are wasteful with the ball."

The Saints coach said he expected Fraser Gehrig to be considered for selection next week and beyond.

The dual Coleman medallist was dropped after failing to jell with Nick Riewoldt and Justin Koschitzke up forward, but Lyon said it is simply a matter of adapting the game plan to the players he had.

"There’s a spot for Fraser in our team…I think once we get all the mechanics right and given our defensive pursuit skills all over the ground then it’s going to allow the three tall forwards," he said.

"We’re working on that and trying to improve that, and get it to a level that’s going to allow Fraser to play. It’s going to take a bit of time. I don’t think it’s mutually exclusive, but when you’re starting from 16th  in forward 50 pressure, something’s got to give.

"I know it is a hot topic and we are sensitive to all of our players. I don’t like dropping anybody, resting or omitting anybody or seeing anyone injured."
