GOLD Coast Suns midfielder Hannah Sexton and AFL-playing brother Alex are used to almost instant critiques of their performances from family.
Their mum Nicole doesn't miss a kick in a busy program each week, checking out the on-field exploits of her children.
For once at least, Nicole had the rare luxury of remaining in the same place – in the same seat, to be precise – so she could watch son Alex kick two goals in the Suns' 13-point loss to the Brisbane Lions in the brutal AFL QClash, before daughter Hannah ran out for the AFL women's exhibition match.
"The whole family loves footy. (Mum) gets along to all our games and, if there's a clash, she will go and watch Alex. But I don't mind,'' Hannah said after her game on Saturday night.
The siblings had to deal with disappointment on the weekend, with Hannah’s women's team surrendering a half-time lead to lose to the Lions by 14 points.
"Mum thought I played alright, but I wasn't really happy with my performance,'' Hannah said.
Alex, two years older than his sister at 22, didn't get the chance to watch Hannah as he had recovery commitments with his Suns teammates immediately after the AFL game. And little sister missed his two goals as she was preparing for her own game.
"I usually go to his games and watch him because he comes to mine. He lives down on the coast and he comes up to watch me (playing in the local league) in Brisbane,'' Hannah said.
Hannah wore No.6 on the weekend (the same number as her brother) and they have matching arm tattoos; Hannah on her left and Alex on his right.
"We're really close, best friends and we're not far apart (in age), so we were always kicking a footy around together when we lived in (the Melbourne suburb of) Reservoir. I've been playing since Auskick and under-nines with Alex in Melbourne. And then kept it going when we moved up here.''
When the Sexton family moved to Queensland, Alex joined local club Springwood and at 18 was drafted by the Suns.
The footballing family has to rely on phone calls and messages to compare notes and experiences, as Alex lives at Broadbeach on the Gold Coast while Hannah is in Brisbane and drives south at the weekends to play with Coolangatta.
"When we do get together we talk plenty of footy,'' Hannah said.
