Sydney Swans Reserves proved too strong for the Queanbeyan Tigers on Saturday afternoon at the SCG, running away with a 130-point victory.

Queanbeyan registered first points two minutes into the game, but it didn’t take long for the Swans to hit back. Nick Smith converted a penalty 20 metres from goal to equal the Tigers’ score, and two minutes later Sam Rowe scored on the run from five metres out, for the Swans to take the lead. Simon Phillips, Jesse White and Ryan Brabazon added their names to the goal scorers list before the Tigers kicked their second. Josh Keen, a top-up player, hit back a minute later with the Swans’ sixth goal for the quarter, then Matt Laidlaw kicked two goals just a minute apart, to take a 39-point lead into the quarter time break.

The second quarter started the same way as the first, with Queanbeyan scoring two minutes in. Ed Barlow, who was playing at centre half forward, was quick to score the Swans ninth goal however the Tiger responded immediately with their fourth. Laidlaw register his third goal for the game and shortly later, a trademark Sean Dempster thumping kick from 55 metres out made it eleven goals for the home side. Jarred Moore snapped a goal but the Tigers got one back a minute later. Laidlaw kicked his fourth goal but again the Tigers came back with two more goals. Phillips scored a further two goals and Jonathan Simpkins added another to increase the Swans lead to 58 points by half time.

The third quarter produced a more even contest, with the Swans only scoring five goals to the Tigers’ three. Smith, Laidlaw, Brabazon and Keen added another goal each to their respective tallies whilst Kieren Jack, who switched between playing on the ball and on the half back flank, registered his first, scoring on the run from 30 metres out. At the final break, the Swans were 71-points ahead.

The Swans produced a strong fourth quarter, scoring nine goals to only one behind for the Tigers. White kicked his second three minutes in, Brabazon kicked his third not long after, Phillips then kicked successive goals, one from a free 20 metres out and the other from a mark taken 30 metres from goal. Matt O’Dwyer chimed in with a goal on the run at an acute angle from 25 metres, Barlow kicked a further two, Simpkin kicked his second for the game and Moore closed the quarter with a goal on the run from 35 metres out.

Phillips, who played forward on the ball was the Swans’ best with his five goal haul. Other solid contributors in the 130-point victory were Brabazon, Simpkin, Barlow, Jack and top-up player Keen, who played across half back.

The Swans Reserves’ take on Ainslie away from home next week, at 2pm on Saturday August 4. They will stay in Canberra overnight to see the seniors take on Melbourne at Manuka on Sunday,
